My Story

In the late 1970s, I injured my back. I remember rolling out of bed onto my hands and knees before pulling myself to my feet using my bureau for support. Over the next four years I experienced varying degrees of pain. With the help of my chiropractor I managed to keep going. In 1982 I had a laminectomy (the removal of degenerated intervertebral disk) at L4/5. The doctor told me I would never run again. For two or three years I felt better, and then the symptoms returned. I could only sleep for an hour or two, and then woke in pain. My wife suggested I see the massage therapist at our local YMCA. She worked directly on my psoas and stretched my body, and after nine months, I was able to do my first sprint triathlon.

At the age of 66 I am still training and participating in triathlons. So I ask, "What is 66 - or any other age - supposed to look like?" I strongly feel we have a choice.
